Trieste has been an important destination for shipping logistics in the Mediterranean sea, connecting overseas goods with the Italian, Austrian and Slovenian inland. The city reclaimed more land from the sea for the port industry, creating a gradient of urban densification from the hill to the shore. Recently, the frequent extreme rain storms have flooded the city occasionally, making the locals rethink their urban fabric concerning the excessive stormwater. New masterplans were proposed from the urban archipelago studio 2023 in TU Delft to come up with different responses to the city's climatic and cultural changes.
Public spaces became the main bodies of analysis and sites to be designed in the city, including the conditions of streets and alleys which connect the anchors, or “aquapunctures” and form a continuous experience. Moreover, flooding future would not be pictured as a disaster, but as a new norm waiting to be adapted.
