Before graduating with their bachelor's degrees, a few students formed a volunteering group, TOMBOLO, to experiment with architectural designs to bridge their connections with the rural part of Hong Kong. The team chose Po Toi Island, the southernmost island in Hong Kong, as their base and initiated a series of design projects with the villagers on the island. Two of the projects went up to the architectural scale, exploring the island community's climatic and territorial challenges. Nonetheless, the innovations successfully attracted more former villagers to come back and rebuild their lost land.
