Passage of Wind

Aeolus School

Technische Universiteit Delft, Msc Graduation 2024 - Cum Laude

Brussels, a city built on a wet marshland, has a rich history of landscape design and engineering. Earth was removed and resettled to create higher ground while parks and avenues were built to patch the gaps among different infrastructures. Thus the network of green spaces and parks in Brussels has become an important topic of its modern and contemporary urban development.

Recently, there has been a massive abandoned trainyard around the north-east suburbs of Brussels, waiting to be urbanised and transformed into a new neighbourhood. This situation was chosen to be the brief of the urban architecture studio 2023 graduation studio at TU Delft.

As I discovered the characteristics of the local wind of the site, I began to imagine how the air entered and interacted with different building masses. Some accelerated, some twisted and calmed the wind. To visualize the dance between the air and architecture, I need an agency which can host adventure and curiosity, while being essential to the future neighbourhood. Therefore, a school, educating kids about wilderness and self-confidence was taken shape for the architecture project.
