Toilet

Architectural Assistant, AJAR Ltd. 2020

Qianhai Guiwan Park is a reclaimed riverbank where the Chinese government cooperated with James Corner to design a green belt anchored with several service buildings. AJAR Ltd. received an invitation to design a service building which holds a light caterer, a lavatory and a sightseeing deck. Due to the gentle slope of the site, the design is shaped to blend into the lawn and explore different horizons in the park. This commercial project was directed by Mr Tsoi Wai Kuen, with my assistance for most of the design drawings and renderings. The Qianhai Administration Bureau informed us of the number of toilets, the height limit of the building and the requirement of universal measures for the disabled.

Since the summer in Shenzhen is scorching and humid, the architecture must provide a generous shelter from the sun and rain. Thus, the building is submerged below the site level, creating a sunken plaza which directs visitors to the cafeteria and washrooms. Above the building, grass is planted on the roof to reduce the heat below while skylights are punctured through the roof to direct mild sunlight into the underground. These features coalesce together and form a playground where visitors can enjoy the pasture and the spectacular riverbank scenery.
